LOCAL SCHOOLS
Our local school district, the Rim of the World Unified School District, has played a large role in my life. Not only did I attend these schools from my first day of kindergarten to my last day of high school, but both my parents were employed by the school district.
My father began teaching at the high school the fall after he graduated from the University of Redlands. He taught biology and also coached the baseball and football teams (he coached the secondary for the CIF championship team in 1964). Over the years, he worked his way through the system, moving from teacher to counselor, to principal at Mary Tone Elementary in Crestline and eventually to Assistant Superintendant and Superintendant of the entire school district. He was Superintendant for seven years, then moved to the County Superintendant's Office where he managed the East Valley Selpa.
My mother taught several grades throughout the years: kindergarten for many years, other elementary grades, then middle school english at Mary Putnam Henck intermediate and finally high school english. Many people still come up to her remembering how she would dress as an enormous pumpkin for Halloween each year. To my mom's credit, she maintains that she never had a bad child in all her years of teaching!
My sister was even involved with the school system. She was the first (and perhaps only, to my knowledge) President of the PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association). It made for some interesting dinner discussions when your sister was the President of the PTSA and your dad was the Superintendant!
Needless to say, my life growing up was full of school activities: sporting events, open houses, back to school nights, helping out in the class room, PTA events, etc. It was a wonderful environment and I really enjoyed knowing the teachers and staff.
We have a very impressive school district that offers our local children an impressive education. To learn more, please click here.
